No matter what I do, I cannot save and reload the layout I create when XAML loads. Upon deserialization, the LayoutRoot orientation is always set to Horizontal.

Hi,
Toolkit v3.4 already has a fix for a vertical orientation upon deserializing. Toolkit v3.4 is available today, june 5th 2017.
I suggest you try with it.
